What is a Pacific Yurt?

We Started with a Circle. And Changed Everything.

In 1978, we looked to the past, to the circular dwellings of Central Asian nomads — and saw the future. A future where shelter didn’t mean square corners, drywall, and sacrifice. Where a space could breathe with the land it stood on. Simple. Strong. Beautiful.

We built the first modern yurt… and haven’t stopped since.

What began in a small Oregon workshop has grown into a global movement. Our yurts are now trusted in national parks, wilderness retreats, backyards, deserts, coastlines, and anywhere people go to feel more connected.

We’re not a trend. We’re the original. And we build every yurt like it’s the most important one we’ve ever made.

The Modern Yurt, Reinvented From The Ground Up

The yurt has been around for thousands of years. But not like this.

Pacific Yurts reimagined the traditional nomadic shelter into a precision crafted, weather-tight, code compliant structure that works just as well for living off grid as it does for glamping resorts or creative studios.

This isn’t a cabin. It’s not a tent. It’s something better.

  • Engineered to stand up to snow, wind, and time
  • Designed to assemble easily and adapt to your needs
  • Built with purpose, quality, and the spirit of the outdoors

If you’ve ever felt like your space should reflect your lifestyle, not define it, a yurt might be what you’ve been looking for.

Anatomy Of A Modern Yurt

A yurt is more than a structure — it’s a harmonious blend of form and function.

Explore the elements that make our yurts exceptional:

  • Central Compression Ring: Supports the entire structure and symbolizes unity and strength.
  • Tension Cable: Aircraft-quality tension cables replace traditional woven bands to ensure stability and resilience.
  • Douglas Fir Rafters: Stress-rated, kiln-dried rafters that offer robust support and natural beauty.
  • Architectural Fabric Walls: Durable, weather-resistant fabric with welded seams for breathable protection.
  • Acrylic Dome Skylight: Brings in natural daylight and opens your space to the stars at night.

“It is an ingenious design, fun to put up and a very beautiful and aesthetically pleasing space.”

– Laurel H., California

Natural Strength

Strength, efficiency, and a naturally aerodynamic shape

The compact shape of the yurt and the combination of lightweight members in tension and compression
mean that the structure is highly efficient in maximizing strength while minimizing material.

These illustrations showcase the yurt’s natural strength, aerodynamic shape, and roof load.

As the original manufacturer of the modern yurt, we have since 1978 shipped our yurts all over the world,
where their strength and durability have been proven in an array of personal, business, and government applications.
